On my 4200 hydro, the PTO lever mover relatively easily from engage to disengage. If I get in a huge hurry while brushhogging and disengage too quickly, the blades certainly will come to a stop with a huge "CLUNK". I can't imagine going from fully engaged to full disengage at full power. I would say what you are experiencing is not normal and deserves a trip to the dealer.

I had the exact same problem on my 4200. My hydro pedals were becoming stiff and wouldn't return to exact neutral. Until my dealer had time to fit me in, I put a jumper lead on the connection to the seat safety switch. This made it much easier to start, because those pedals had to be in exactly the correct position for it to start. I don't know exactly what the dealer did, but it works MUCH better now.

I have never heard of the safety kit you're talking about. However, on my 4200 w/ 420 loader, the first week I had it I was pulling fence posts and the loader fell off, very nearly injuring my Dad. After re-installing the loader (a real trick when on uneven, muddy ground) I noticed the engagement mechanism was not even close to being adjusted correctly. I adjusted it, and contacted my dealer, telling him I wanted a fix. On the 4200/420 there are pre-drilled holes on the front mounting plate of the tractor and loader. The dealer supplied 2 pins, washers, and pins. There's no way the loader will come off with this very simple fix. Is your setup different?

Terry, I swear I read a thread where someone stated they received an upgraded 3rd SCV valve. This was of interest to me because mine hangs in the up position and does not recenter, even after having it "repaired" by the dealer. I've looked all over and even used the search engine and cannot now find the thread. Although I haven't had trouble with my rubber piece coming off the handle (yet), I wonder if this "upgraded" valve would cure your problem too.

I've had a JD4200 for a little over six months and have checked the battery at least once. When I checked the battery this weekend, there was severe corrosion on the positive terminal with some corrossion on the negative. After removing the battery (which is installed directly in front of the hydraulic oil cooler), I found that the bottom one third of the fins on the cooler had corrosion damage as deep as 1/4

If any of you find a similar problem, I would appreciate you e-mailing me so I can contact the factory.

Mowing foot high grass with a finish mower is bound to drag the engine down unless going very slow. Another possible cause is that sometimes on the JD's the lift control handle will not return to the neutral position after being lifted. This will cause the hydraulics to whine and will also drag down the engine. Hope this helps!

I love my 4200 hydro. If you've found one, you'd better make up your mind quick or the hydro will be gone. I've seen posts from guys ordering JD hydros with NOVEMBER deliveries. Good Luck!

Paul,<br>Tried putting the 90 degree fittings up yesterday afternoon. As a matter of fact, this is the direction they were in when I first bought the tractor. In this position, the hoses work their way over to the right and rub on the TOP of the tire. I guess this is why the extra ties are required. The 420 manual states that only the 870 tractor should use the 90 degree fittings. The picture is the manual shows straight fittings. It seems to me, if the 90's were removed that straight fittings would work MUCH better. <br>

Jim,<br>I've got a similar problem w/ my JD4200 hydro. I'm now starting to walk with a limp. The manual says there are two grease fittings under the pedals. I can only find one. A previous post said the manual was wrong and there is only one. If you find anything that helps, please let me know. My pediatrist and I thank you in advance. Best of Luck.<br>

Bob,<br>I agree with the other posts. Only thing to add is that you've got to have brakes on the trailer unless your pulling with a fairly large truck. Electric brakes are least expensive, but remember, you've also got to have a controller installed in the truck.<br>Since I'm pulling with a light weight truck (Explorer) that I plan on trading in fairly soon, and I also pull this trailer around on my property with my tractor carrying limbs, rocks, and other junk, I opted for the more expensive surge brakes on both axles. It takes a lot to get the trailer going when pulling it with my JD4200 loaded on, but you can't even tell it's there when it comes to stopping. <br>Also, if you plan on keeping your trailer for a while, definately get the pressure treated lumber (or more expensive tread plate) unless you want to replace the deck after a few years. FYI 18' x 83

Many posts have mentioned the stiffness of the hydro pedals on the 4000 series. My 4200 seemed to be getting a little stiff, so after checking the manual, I went to grease the 2 grease fittings shown in the manual. After crawling under, over, around and feeling every possible hiding place I can only find one fitting under the hydro pedals. Has anyone else found the second, and if so, where?

My manual is exactly like Frank's. I know my dealer has sold several 4000 series JD's since they have become available, and I'm the first one to ever ask for a new hydraulic filter. They have never even had one in stock and had to special order it! So, I get to go back again and have the counter guy double check me to see if I have pointy ears or antenna in the back of my head.

I'm looking for a farm wagon to do hay rides once or twice a year for company parties, but can't find any available. My JD dealer says JD used to offer one, and they were also available through Sears and Montgomery Ward, but now he doesn't know where to find them either. Any ideas?

Every now and again I have the same problem with one hose on my 4200/420. The pressure is built up on the loader side, and moving the joystick will not relieve the pressure. I have to use slip joint pliers (w/ cloth wrapped around so as not to damage the coupling) to press against the center of the male coupling. Watch out, because a big squirt of fluid will follow. Then the fitting will connect with ease. Hope this helps!

The intake air heater is only used when the outside temp is below 40F. Then, just push in on the starter key for 10 to 15 seconds for temps between 40 and 0 F. Below zero, move to a warmer climate!
